Sagittarius in astrology

Sagittarius represents the result of transformation. Once we go through the redemption and healing process of Scorpio and Ophiuchus, we come to the awareness of life and life's purpose. Optimism, purposefulness, and adventurousness are all qualities this sign represents.

What does Sagittarius represent?

Sagittarius centaur

Sagittarius represents the qualities that come after transformation. It comes after Scorpio and Ophiuchus which were about diving deep and embracing the deeper parts of life. As we have now transformed, the qualities of freedom and liberation emerge. Sagittarius is what happens after the transformation process.

After we transform, it's very freeing. This is the analogy of the butterfly emerging out of the cocoon. We're lighter, we're freer, and we have that top-down perspective. Sagittarius is that top-down perspective and exploring what life is about. Exploring life, seeing things in this new way, and asking "What is the purpose and meaning of all this?" Because life isn't only about diving deep and transforming. Change and transformation are only a means to the journey itself.

Sagittarius Characteristics

After transformation, we have a greater perspective. Qualities like optimism and open-mindedness emerge. When we have the bigger picture in mind, we see how everything fits together, we know that it's all part of a larger plan. It's through this higher perspective that we don't get so caught up in the weeds.

If you have a lot of Sagittarius in your chart, it's good to balance it with the more practical side of things. Gemini, the sign opposite Sagittarius, is all about the meticulous details, the practical. Gemini asks "How can we take this optimism, or these possibilities, and apply them?" Gemini grounds Sagittarius. On the other hand, if you have a lot of Gemini, it helps to see things a bit more optimistically and see what's possible.

Sagittarius is very freedom-loving. This is the sign that we get to open our horizons. We see the future and its possibilities. This perspective is what creates this liberating, freedom-loving, and adventurous side of Sagittarius.

Sagittarius is very purposeful. Sagittarius is the Centaur shooting its bow and arrow. Also being a fire sign it can be very direct, intentional, and purposeful. With Sagittarius, we understand our purpose, our path, and we're very direct and intent on it. It's about inspiration, purpose, and the excitement of following that guiding spirit.

The Centaur is a bottom-half-horse on top-half-human. The lower half is the animal. Ophiuchus and Scorpio are where we embraced the lower qualities of self. The Centaur has merged and embraced these animal and "lower" qualities. That's the freedom of the horse and the open range. Once we have that integrated we embrace the full spectrum of life and what life has to offer.

Birth Chart Example

Sagittarius symbol

A Sun in Sagittarius person views life through the lens of how they can expand their mental and literal horizons. They can be seen as free-spirits and full of inspiration, whether it's of the mental or literal kind. The house containing Sagittarius will show where the inspiration is oriented. For example, in the 12th house, this inspiration would be oriented toward spirituality, creativity, or things important to the person on a soul level.

Summary

Sagittarius is very adventurous, philosophical, and very open-minded. It's mutable, being all about change and listening to our spirit. When we approach life in the Sagittarian way we have more malleability, adaptability, and flexibility. With fire, Sagittarius is willing to act on inspiration, possibilities, and listen to the inner flame.
